Megachurch?
I am traveling and this morning (Sunday) went to the fitness room at the hotel I’m staying at. The gym I usually go to has televisions, but they pipe the audio through radio frequencies, and people who want to watch television can listen in on their headset. Here, the television was on and the volume up, so I saw Joel Osteen, a “religious” motivational speaker. It’s shocking what modern day Christianity purports itself to be. The entire sermon hinged on a feel-good message that if one tries, one can be a success. His sermon seemed all in the interest of his new book Become a Better You. And he’s successful too: the stadium-sized “church” was packed to the rafters, the production quality of the show is more evidence at Osteen’s success at making money from quasi-spiritual motivational talk. Where’s the hellfire and brimstone? Or at least, where is the sense of something sacred, something less blatently secular?
Blog of the day: I came across a blog about sacred music, it’s called Sacred Sound.
